ART

What is ART?

Active Release Technique, or ART, stands as a comprehensive soft tissue management system meticulously designed to address overuse injuries in muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Initially developed to serve elite athletes, ART has demonstrated its efficacy in enhancing performance and effectively treating a range of conditions, including but not limited to plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, shoulder issues, and numerous other ailments arising from cumulative trauma and scar tissue formation.

The Origins of Overuse Conditions

Overuse conditions manifest in three significant ways:

  • Acute conditions (such as pulls, tears, or collisions).
  • Accumulation of small tears (commonly known as micro-trauma).
  • Insufficient oxygen supply, also referred to as hypoxia.

Conditions such as muscle tears, muscle adhesions, scar tissue, and stiff joints, often associated with patients having arthritis, can be effectively treated with ART. Additionally, nerve entrapment issues like carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, sciatic nerve entrapment, and various overuse injuries (including rotator cuff syndrome, tennis and golfer’s elbow, runner’s knee, and plantar fasciitis) all find successful resolutions through ART.

Each of these factors can stimulate the production of dense and resilient scar tissue within the affected area. This scar tissue restricts the free movement of tissues that need to glide smoothly. As this scar tissue accumulates, it results in muscle weakness and shortening, leading to tendon tension and tendonitis, with potential nerve entrapment. These complications can manifest as pain, reduced range of motion, and a loss of strength. Nerve entrapment may additionally cause tingling, numbness, and weakness.

Experience an ART Treatment

Each ART session blends examination and treatment, with our expert staff utilizing their hands to assess the texture, tightness, and mobility of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Any anomalies in these tissues are meticulously addressed by applying precisely targeted tension while guiding the patient through specific movements.
